A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
