Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Fighters Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a wide array of characters, and a thrilling plot showcasing celestial beings, evil spirits, and dark forces expanding in strength within the urban setting.

Warning: Spoilers for the latest installment of this adventure are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The third episode finished on a dramatic pause and introduced the initial group of characters who will split off from the main group to begin their own adventure, apart from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team includes the determined fighter (portrayed by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Given 13 cast members, it was evident from the outset that keeping everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

That’s why, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Introduction, connecting the characters’ stories before splitting into three distinct groups: Warriors, Schemers, and Seekers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

According to the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for participants who are drawn to a classically intense combat and conflict-driven story mode where non-violent answers are few and far between.

Upon first impression, figures such as the reluctant priest the cleric might appear out of place, but the events of episode 3 demonstrate why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

First, the team knows exactly where to head next after a intense opening clash with the antagonists.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose passing started the campaign’s events—manipulated the enemy for his selfish purposes, breaking into the hidden lair, striking Thimble, and taking all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

Casimir then settled his obligations and ran away to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, north of Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each member has a specific drive to leave the city the metropolitan area:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and trusted friend, desires vengeance.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in the northern area and cautions that it is a hostile environment.
  • The strong character and The cleric, having resisted his family’s wishes to kill Teor and instead freed him, have nowhere else to go.
  • However, their reputation as prominent individuals in the powerful family could help the party enter areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character vowed a life debt to Wicander for his salvation and will now follow him anywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

In addition, all of them are hunted by the authorities that govern the setting for a range of causes, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • Thimble and The character are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and The cleric defied the influential house and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by the family.

This means them little choice but to journey toward the remote area in pursuit of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

Based on the latest episode’s post-show segment, we discover that the combat party will not appear the following episode, leaving the rest of the participants to round up the Explorers and Planners groups.

Fans can anticipate learning which characters will be assigned to which table in the season’s final introductory chapter, released on next week.
