FromSoftware's Dodge Roll Merits to Be Celebrated

If you've played the popular action RPG, or most other action-adventure title, you're probably well-versed in the glorious feature known as the “evasion roll.” This defensive move allows your character to perform a forward, sideways, or backward ground roll to avoid incoming harm and move away from opponents. Appears practical, wouldn't you say?

This rolling move, however, has gotten significant backlash, and not only due to the tumbling; some have dubbed it dumb, a cop-out, and an implausible action — and in some cases, I agree. You should see me tumbling about hostile mobs in another popular RPG — they can't hit me! But the title's dodge roll represents the evasion to top all dodge rolls rolling dodges, and let me explain.

Regarding this title, the designers identified a clever approach to respond to all views claiming the maneuver is not challenging enough: simply give all foes unreasonable strength, triple that, and all heroes who ventures close them will feel immensely thankful for their dodge-roll ability, myself included. When the stakes are this high, pulling off a perfect dodge feels like an achievement, instead of an unfair advantage.

No different defensive move in this RPG comes close to this feeling of accomplishment and dependability, since rapid sprints don't cover much ground and defensive postures are readily overcome by powerful foes. One player advised jumping as a go-to game evasion method, but in addition to lacking optimal placement, It wasn't clear to me taking a crushing hit could enhance my odds of beating enemies (lack of skill, maybe).

Mastering the Technique

While the dodge roll offers respite in an incredibly challenging experience, it isn't without skill. To begin with, the game's evasion move just activates a window of invulnerability after you release the roll control, which hinders a rapid, fearful withdrawal from perilous circumstances. Furthermore, although it may carry you off from opponents, it's far more effective to utilize it as a moment to move nearer, preferably behind the opponent, and strike blows. In conclusion, you must still grasp and foresee opponent moves, because rolling prematurely of a prolonged preparation might terminate your protection before the blow lands… resulting in severe damage.

A Well-Designed Feature

While dodge-rolling in quick succession could appear somewhat silly (give it up for Geralt again), this isn't really an option in this title. Of course, that still doesn't make it a realistic battle technique — the very cause why it would be pure horror to see it in a game like Kingdom Come: Deliverance — yet we're discussing a dazzling imaginative experience we're talking about, thus why worry?

Like any proper dodge roll, the game's dodge motion is enhanced with a little somersault-y hop at the commencement, giving it an energetic feel rather than plopping the player downward. According to your loadout, the technique may seem super agile or somewhat sluggish, yet it's always swifter and more seamless than the rolling dodges found in the earlier games. True, you will stick your large weapon on the floor while equipped with it, but that's your responsibility for avoiding a crossbow (In jest — don't play the game using ranged options).

Ideal Equilibrium

The game's avoidance feature establishes an ideal equilibrium between difficulty and chance, offering hope of victory while risking the loss of that hope at the smallest error. Learn this skill, and you'll be rewarded with more than triumph, but fulfillment.
