"Do you know when you'll be chatting with Haim?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There is only a single issue: I also wants to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're far from alone. A host of famous supporters have also petitioned for the honor.

It's clear a special quality is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy nominees.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a close gang. Their visuals repeatedly show them walking in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such unfettered joy you can't help but think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the biggest honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to start a band."

"So anyone is invited to be the next member of Haim."

Award Milestone

The trio are connecting from their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the honor is deeply felt by the band.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The record was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that unique transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words track departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in real time who they want to be.

"I love summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to actively work on ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That developed resilience called for a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The trio's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal misadventures.

Someone ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Future

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

But Haim will consistently be their number one priority.

"We have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still kicking."
