Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The true challenge facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
